The Arrangement by Sarah Dunn
“Life is long. And it’s getting longer for most of us. Most people in this country will have three or four marriages in their lifetime. Each one will challenge them and suit them in a different way. The lucky few, the ones who are willing to work at it, will have a handful of very different marriages, all with the same person.” Ya’ll, I absolutely loved this book. This is a story for when you have been in the trenches of marriage for awhile. The newness has worn off, things you thought would never aggravate you about your spouse now irritate the crap out of you, and you find yourself wondering where did the spark go? Children, jobs, schedules and playdates have consumed what used to be a thrilling, steamy, exciting relationship and when an opportunity to have some alone time presents itself, you both would rather just take a nap.
In Sarah Dunn’s latest novel, Lucy and Owen find themselves perpetually exhausted and in a slump from the demands of parenting and day to day life. One evening over dinner they find themselves contemplating the question “what would happen if we had an open marriage for 6 months?” After much thought and some clear cut ground rules, they decide to try it out. As you can imagine, things go awry fairly quickly. I wrote down so many wonderful quotes from this book that I lost count. The writing is sharp, smart and (in my opinion) a very accurate depiction of motherhood and trying to do it all. Oh, and it’s hilarious. I’m talking laugh out loud to the point where people sitting around you think you are weird, hilarious. There is a scene that involves chickens, a Doberman, a llama and a church that I am still chuckling about.
