White Fur by Jardine Libaire
Aaaahhhh White Fur. What a wild ride. I must admit that I was hesitant going in to this one as I had heard it was a graphic, sex laden spin on Romeo and Juliet. Are the sex scenes explicit? Yes. Will they make you uncomfortable? Possibly. This is a book that will push you, and I think you will either love it or you will hate it. I can understand how it would take you past your normal comfort level and perhaps make a reader close the book early. However, I strongly feel that is such a disservice to the novel if all you see on the pages is sex. This story is beautifully and passionately told. The writing is gritty, provocative, and in my opinion, poetic. Jardine Libaire spins a tale that is rough and hard but gorgeous, just like the main character Elise.
From the first page of the book we are thrown in to the tumultuous and complicated relationship between Elise Perez and Jamie Hyde. He is heir to an immense banking fortune, she is a high school drop out who has had to fight and make her own way through the world for the few possessions that she has. Their relationship starts out as pure lust, but once they fall for each other it is all consuming. Elise’s love for Jamey borders on primal and animalistic in the way she wants to possess him so completely. Their love burns like a thousand suns, but also threatens to destroy them through those around them who can not accept or understand their attraction to each other. I was completely drawn in to the setting, to their love affair and to the scandalous ways in which Jamey’s family tried to keep them apart. I rooted hard for Elise throughout the whole story – underneath her tough, determined exterior she was wise and kind to those who she allowed in to her heart and I just wanted her to get her happy ending. Does she? You will have to read the book to find out. All the stars for Jardine Libaire and her captivating White Fur novel. I will read whatever you write.
