Enter The Dark by Chris Thomas Blog Tour
An anonymous website, a few clicks, and Joe Henderson’s life is changed forever.
‘The Red Room’ is the only place where the inadequacies of a weak justice system are righted and where the line between good and evil becomes blurred. When the lights go up, viewers bid, criminals are punished, and the Brotherhood of the Righteous broadcasts a show like no other.
The room has remained hidden until now, when a video arrives in the inbox of the Metropolitan Police Cyber Crime Unit: the torture and killing of a notorious criminal. But outclassed, outplayed, and torn apart by corruption, is there anything Detective Pete Harris and his team can do except watch?
Their only lead may be the room’s latest bidder, Joe Henderson. Because when Joe found the Red Room, it found him too, and now the Brotherhood are watching through the wires, willing to do evil for a righteous cause, to become the men that even monsters are scared of.
As they pull Joe deeper into the dark web, will he find any mercy and any way out? Or will he be the Red Room’s next volunteer?
Have you ever watched cases in the news where the perpetrator has done something so awful and heinous and through either legal loopholes or slick lawyers, they get off and serve little to no time for the crime they have committed? Do you some times shake your head in disgust and wish there was some way that the criminals could endure the pain and suffering that they inflicted on to their victims? Well, Chris Thomas takes this premise and unleashes a fantastic debut novel where the wrong is righted by a vigilante group known as The Righteous Brotherhood. They seek out perpetrators who have committed horrific crimes and inflict their own sense of justice on a game show type platform. But they don’t do it alone. In the deep seldom traversed places of the internet is a corner known as the dark web. For a fee you can enter and access their site and the viewers get to judge what type of punishment the people receive. Child molesters, rapists, domestic abusers -- it is a free for all and anything goes. The grand prize is retribution and death.
I was hooked from the very first chapter, Thomas grabbed me and did not let go until the book ended. The idea that with a few clicks you can descend down a morbidly dark rabbit hole with little hope of finding your way out is very frightening. I don’t really surf the web that much as the characters in this story did and I can say after reading it, I will stick to my Goodreads and Banana Republic browsing thank you very much. Thomas also does an excellent job of making you consider what your own personal ethics are when the system fails to punish people who have committed horrific crimes. I will say there are a lot of characters throughout the story so at times it was a challenge to keep track of everything. I also really wanted more back story on Detective Harris even though his situation was explained more fully towards the end of the book.
I will make the disclaimer that if you are squeamish or do not care for graphic violence in your books, then this may not be the book for you. If you like an in your face, gripping, fast paced plot then look no further than Enter the Dark. This is an excellent thriller debut and I am excited to see what Chris Thomas writes next. 4 stars.
