Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine

Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine

Now THIS is how paranoia is done!!! Bravo to Rachel Caine for penning such a twisty and deceptive psychological thriller.  Gina Royal is the typical suburban mom.  She juggles PTA meetings, her kids crazy schedules, maintaining her house and all that entails along with keeping her husband happy.  But when an accidental car crash reveals the truth about who her husband really is, she is forced to reinvent herself for the safety and protection of her children.  Living under a new identity and constantly on the move from people who wish to do her family harm, Gina Royal becomes a force to be reckoned with.  Gone is the innocent, meek house wife… in her place is a tough, skilled, bad ass mom who will do whatever it takes to survive and protect her children. Gina must maintain a constant vigil and never letting her guard down after years of running has taken its toll.  All she wants for her children is that they have a somewhat normal life, some peace and quiet, and the opportunity to stay in one place for more than a year.  Gina’s covered her tracks, their new identities are solid and for the first time in years she starts to feel like she can finally breathe a little.  She and her children decide to settle in the small town of Stillhouse.   But then the bodies start to pop up.

The tension in this book was palpable and the author did a fantastic job of creating an unstable atmosphere of persecution and distrust.  Melvin was one horrific, vile man and I loved how the author slowly spun a sordid web of the crimes he had committed, providing only bits and pieces of information at a time, as I read wide-eyed through the last half of this book.  Now I will say, that I found it extremely odd that Gina never ever went in to Melvin’s workshop.  Never.  Not one single time.  That didn’t sit quite right with me, but it was necessary to the plot.   That being said, the cliffhanger at the end of the book caught me completely by surprise and in my head I found myself screaming RUN!!!!!!!! Stillhouse Lake is the start of a new series and I can not wait to see what Rachel Caine has in store for the Royals next.  I need Book 2 right away, please and thank you!!!  Thank you so very much to Amazon Publishing for sending me an advanced copy.  I enjoyed this book immensely!!!  4 stars!!
