Speak No Evil
Do not be deceived by the small size of this book, Speak No Evil packs a powerful punch. This is the story of Niru, a young Nigerian teenager who is struggling to tell his parents that he is gay. His parents are furious when they discover his secret and go to great lengths to “cure him of his abomination.” I was not expecting the plot twist between Niru and Meredith and I was absolutely crushed and angered when Meredith and her family made the decision to remain silent and let the truth go untold. I choose to believe that karma exacts vengeance on Meredith (as well as her parents) at some point down the road because the alternative that they get away with what they have done is too awful for me to accept. I am being vague on purpose.... not knowing much about the story greatly enhanced my reading experience with this one. If you are looking for a super quick read that is extremely timely and relevant and will spark thought provoking discussion, Speak No Evil is the book for you. 4 Star. Many thanks to Harper Books for sending this gut wrenching story my way.
