I'll Be Gone In the Dark by Michelle McNamara
"I don't want to have a dream," she says. I brush her sandy hair back, put my hand on her forehead, and look straight into her big brown eyes. "You are not going to have a dream," I tell her, with crisp, confident enthusiasm. Her body releases its tension, and she goes to sleep. I leave the room, hoping that what I promised but have no control over will be true. That's what we do. All of us. We make well-intentioned promises of protection we can't always keep. I'll look out for you. But then you hear a scream and you decide it's some teenagers playing around. A young man jumping a fence is taking a shortcut. The gunshot at 3 a.m. is a firecracker or a car backfiring. Awaiting you is the cold, hard floor and a conversation that may lead nowhere; you collapse onto your warm pillow and turn back to sleep."
If you are into true crime stories in any way, stop what you are doing, RUN to your nearest bookstore and read this book. RIGHT. NOW. Michelle McNamara's incredible story of the Golden State Killer is hands down one of my favorite reads of the year and also secures a spot on my list of best books of all time. Yes, it's that good. Michelle's attention to detail, her obsession with bringing the killer to justice and her amazing skill as a writer leaps off of each page. I am not ashamed to say that I got up several times and checked to make sure my doors were locked as I was reading (and I read this in broad daylight on Sunday afternoon). I flew through this meticulous and comprehensive work in a matter of hours and then spent the rest of the day going down the rabbit hole reading all the articles I could find on the recently captured Joseph James DeAngelo, Jr. To know that this man has walked among us for over 30 years since his last known committed crime is absolutely terrifying. Thank you so Patton Oswalt for your tireless efforts to ensure that Michelle's work was published and that her incredible gift for investigative research was shared with us all. I am in awe of her talent and tenacity. ALL THE STARS for this brilliant work.
